Hi, my name is Kat, and I'm a designer.

What type of designer, you may ask? Well, that's kind of a tough question. I mean, some people like to do one or two things...I on the other hand like to do it all.

Photographing the same patch of flowers twenty times just to get the lighting perfect? Done that.

Staying up all night making web pages just because HTML sounded like a fun thing to learn? Yep.

Sewing until my fingers bleed and my calluses weep? Over and over and over and still I never get tired of it.

I can't call myself a "costume designer" or a "web designer" or a "graphic designer" because I'm all of that, and none of that too. I'm a designer; no more, no less.

Design isn't just something you do. It's a state of mind. It's "art with limitations." It's being presented with a problem and figuring out how to solve it in a unique and creative, yet still practical and useful, way. It's looking at things in the world and figuring out how you can make them better. That's what I try to do every day.

More mundanely, I suppose I'm a designer with aspirations towards greatness. Or...aspirations toward actually doing something in my field. That's probably a little more accurate. I'm a graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in Textile Technology (and a minor in Japanese!) although in the six years since I received my degree, I haven't done a damn thing with it.

But...a few months ago I woke up and realized that I was tired of doing what I've been doing for a living. Treading water and plugging along day after day suddenly felt monumentally unfulfilling, and so I decided that I was going to pull myself out of the endless middle-class march toward retirement and take one last shot at doing what I really want to do (and should be doing!) with my life.

I've never been one to do anything halfway, so this means I've packed up my stuff and moved across the country to go back to school in Los Angeles. I'm currently a student at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. So far it's going pretty well, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the whole experience takes me!

Anyway, enough from me. Take a look around the place; see what I've done so far with my design life. Check out the blog and see what I'm currently working on...or ranting and raving about. That's what this site is here for!
